Barbecue Enthusiasts

Beginners ask us many questions about how to cook specific cuts of meat, which seasonings to use, and how to overcome specific challenges on the smoker or grill. We really enjoy sharing our first-hand experience and passion for backyard cooking with our customers, and some of them even come back later to share their enthusiasm for our recipes and techniques and to ask more questions.

So… if you’re new to barbecue, we’d love to guide you on your new adventure!

Barbecue Tips for Beginners

#1: Choosing Your Seasonings

A great seasoning adds “spice” to your food like nothing else! We have 100 or more different barbecue seasonings in our store. It’s easy to either get overwhelmed or carried away, so we recommend starting with these three foundational seasonings:

How To Use These Seasonings

  • Zesty is excellent on chicken, seafood, and nearly everything, for that matter.
  • Mix equal parts of Zesty and TX Brisket for ribs.
  • Mix equal parts of Zesty, TX Brisket, and Spicy for pork butts. We’ve used this combination a lot and have gotten many positive comments on this.

Visit our store at 140 W Main Street in New Holland, PA to pick up these three seasonings for an excellent starting point. If you can’t contain your excitement, we’ve got dozens of other wonderful choices for adding pizzazz to your food. Our staff will be glad to make some recommendations too.

#2: Getting the Fire Going

If you’ve got a charcoal smoker or grill, use a good quality charcoal. We carry some of the best brands of charcoal, including Royal Oak’s Chef Select 100% hardwood briquettes and Rockwood lump charcoal. We also stock a variety of pellets and smoking wood.

Lighting a successful charcoal fire doesn’t have to be frustrating. Get yourself a propane torch or a BBQ Dragon charcoal chimney and before you know it, you'll be building charcoal fires the fun and easy way. You can find all these items in our store at 140 W Main Street in New Holland, PA.

#3: Knowing When It’s Done

A lot of beginners ask us how they can tell when their meat is done, and that’s a great question because one of the keys to becoming the hero of your next party is to avoid drying out the meat by overcooking it. Another danger is serving undercooked meat which can make people sick.

An instant-read thermometer is a worthwhile investment for any barbecue enthusiast. Whether you have $30 to spend on a thermometer, or you decide to go with a more high-end one such as the Thermapen MK4 or Maverick’s PT-75, learn how to use it and memorize the target internal temperatures of each meat category, and you’ll be well on your way to serving amazing barbecue to your guests with confidence.
